Wierzchowiska is a large village at the springs of the Sanna river on the southern border of the Roztocze and the Urzędowskie Hills.

The first references to village can be found in the Długosz Chronicle describing the Potok parish. We can learn from it that organised religious life in the area of Wierzchowiska existed as early as at the turn of the 14th and the 15th century.. During the Nazi occupation the village was the location of a labour camp for Jews, the prisoners of which worked in the nearby quarries. In July 1944 the village saw clashes between Robert Satanowski's AL (People's Army) "Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła" ("Poland has not perished yet") group and motorised German troops.

Currently, the village is a prosperous centre of agricultural production. It is characterised by an exceptional picturesque location. Here, the Sanna river and the streams which periodically flow into it have deeply divided the loess cover of the Upland of Lublin and uncovered Tertiary limestones and Cretaceous rocks lingering in valleys.
